Like father, like daughter
Sophie Crumb has taken over the family business with her raunchy, decadent, often autobiographical comics. R. Daddy’s influence is apparent in her drawing style, with its sexually explicit images and anthropomorphized animals, but she has created a personality of her own, revealing real truths about relationships, self-control, and guilt. Though the Crumb name helps, the 24-year-old still needs to make ends meet, which she does by creating custom comic strips at the low price of $150 (most original art goes for more than that) or $225 for an inked version. Go to elsewares.com, supply a six-panel story line with dialogue, and Crumb will depict it in 2-D.

Keep H.O.P.E. alive!
An L.A.-based organization, whose acronym stands for “Horrified Observers of Pedestrian Entertainment,” seeks to rid the world of the rich and talentless. The group’s 2,000 operatives and supporters infiltrate and protest events like Paris Hilton’s book signing, the Academy Awards, and showings of Jimmy Fallon’s <tki>Taxi.</tki> Its ongoing CD exchange program allows you to return your Ashlee Simpson CD and other equally embarrassing albums for records by real artists such as the Ramones, Aretha Franklin, and Elvis Costello. “It’s a lot more fun to help change the face of our culture through action than to sit in front of the TV every night complaining,” says founder Chris Jackson. The Web site (hopeinamerica.com) also features a blog with daily media criticism and more detailed accounts of their campaigns.

Get pumped up
Did you know that high-heeled shoes are “a symbol of the woman”? According to a new greeting card company called Pumps (pumpsgreetings.com), stilettos and platforms represent the female struggle. The cards bear images of scary female footwear with questionably inspirational messages that run the gamut of clichés and shoe-as-life metaphors. Like the Dalai Lama of Payless, Pumps provides self-esteem boosters and relationship advice, such as “Don’t be a footnote in someone else’s life” or “You are priceless and so is he / Invest emotionally, not financially / Because true love is free.” You go, girl! — Amber Drea
