Venus Zine’s 1st Annual Photo Contest: Food  Issue #45 Issue #45

For our first annual Photo Contest, Venus Zine received over 1,500 entries from talented photographers all over the world. Our esteemed panel of judges selected one winner from each of five different categories—street fashion, music/concert, travel, portrait, and food—which we present in our winter issue (on newsstands now!), along with our readers’ choice and staff favorites.

Since we didn't have room to print 'em, we decided to pull 30 of our favorite runners-up in the food category and share them here. Take a look, and let us know what you think! We'll give our favorite (constructive!) commenter a prize.

“This photo was taken at Big Wong in the Chinatown of NYC. When I walk in and inhale the scent of freshly roasted duck, and hear the deadly chop of a flashing knife against a butchering block, I feel at home. When old ladies push towards the front of the take out line asking for the extra fatty, extra flavorful pieces of barbecue pork to take home, I feel happy in my heart. And when the waiters are brusque in their manner, but efficient in their service, I know that all is right in the world.”

photographer: Sara Armstrong

“yellow mustard. rye bread. montreal smoked meat.”

photographer: Jessica Smolinski

“It's so hard to pass by a "Hot n' Fresh" sign at my local Krispy Kreme!”

photographer: Diana Ramos

“Upon visiting my first traditional English pub I opted for traditional English cuisine. Had to capture the moment of my first proper fish n' chips with mint peas and my friend's bangers n' mash.”

photographer: Janelle Olson

"macaroons!"

photographer: Taylor Poulin

“This weird little guy is a cherimola fruit native to Colombia and Peru. I cannot describe the taste. It was something totally new to my American palate. It was soggy and bland, and if you ate close to it's core, you experienced an unpleasant bitter aftertaste. I was eating this fruit, sharing it with my boyfriend, on his grandmother's bed in Colombia. The afternoon light was shining perfectly through her bedroom window, and the silver spoon looked like it was painted in a Renaissance still life. I didn't end up finishing the fruit, but it was worth it for the photograph.”

photographer: Ali Donohue

“Film photograph of food from In-N-Out burger.”

photographer: Alicia Bradley

“Hot chocolate from a cafe in Paris- it was literally like drinking fondue and came in a pitcher.”

photographer: Pradeep Adussuriya

“children, food, collaboration, create.”

photographer: Nicole Worley

“Cute/yummy cupcake made by a friend!”

I love “A simple, graphic, black & white image of fresh eggs” by Catherine Hunsburger. The composition and contrast of the photo is excellent. Great pic!
