Folio Watch: Molly Schafer

mime-8.jpegMuch of Schafer’s work that she’s been creating for the past two years came out of watching Xena Warrior Princess and incorrectly learning that there were no female centaurs.

"I'm also interested in creating non ‘hot’ images of females," Schafer says. "Our culture is so inundated with airbrushed images of women, porn, and plastic surgery. I tend to focus on mammalian characteristics – hair and breasts. I painstakingly draw individual body hairs. I like to think a beard signifies wisdom on a female the same way it does on a male. Also I like to draw unattractive breasts; a friend of mine refers to them as dugs. In the world of a chimpish warrior lady, breasts are merely functional or in the way."

Her more recent work considers other ways of merging the human and animal. Check out www.mollyschafer.com for more info.
