Juliana Hatfield  Issue #29 Issue #29

On the heels of their second album, the Some Girls frontwoman reveals how she feels about music critics and her plans for writing a book

Horoscope by Ophi and Tali Edut, the AstroTwins

STATS
Juliana Hatfield was born in a house in Wiscasset, Maine, on July 27, 1967

MADE FOR FAME
Leos are natural-born stars and performers. They are proud, glamorous, loyal, and bold empire-building icons. As a Rat (in the Chinese horoscope), Juliana is ambitious, though secretly insecure. Blended with the expressive Leo energy, she bravely shares her deepest human frailties and fears, especially through the arts.  I’m a Rat. Hmmm. Is that bad? I would agree that I am loyal and proud, but I am not, and have never been, the slightest bit glamorous. I would even argue that I am the opposite: messy, dirty, low-key, low maintenance. I am an icon to a small handful of people — my empire is tiny. But it’s mine. My insecurity has never been a secret — I’m kind of an emotional exhibitionist (listen to my music, read my interviews). My empire was built on my frailties and fears.

NEED FOR FREEDOM
Juliana’s moon is in Aquarius, the sign of rebellion and original thought. It sits in the fourth house of her chart, which rules women and femininity, making her an icon for women’s freedom. Both the moon and the fourth house rule motherhood, and Aquarius rules friendship. Juliana likely plays a maternal role to her friends and as a mom, will be her children’s confidante.  Freedom is pretty much all I care about. And, yes! I am an icon for women’s freedom! Why have so many so-called feminist journalists/music critics failed to notice this? Until the day I die I will continue to resist being boxed into any of the traditional female roles. I don’t really consciously have the maternal instinct because having to take care of someone impinges on my sense of freedom.
LOOKS AREN’T EVERYTHING
The rising sign is the first impression one makes and influences physical appearance. Libra rising can give Juliana a delicate, pretty-girl look. She may be underestimated in the music industry or could give off a softer vibe than she intends. However, likeable Libra gives Juliana the charm and social grace that will open doors.  Yes, I think that a lot of people never could get past the delicate, girly sound of my voice. I think that in some ways it has worked to my disadvantage.
COMMITMENT ISSUES
Juliana has Venus, the love planet, in Gemini, which can make a person unable to commit to one person or idea. Because Gemini rules communication and one’s other half, she will need a soul twin, someone who doesn’t bore her. She may have many romances, especially long-distance ones. Having Saturn, the career planet, in Gemini makes her a gifted writer, though she may agonize over finding the right words or have to overcome self-criticism and communication challenges. Another astrologist once told me that I was Venus in Virgo, not Gemini, and that this didn’t bode well for my love life. But she basically said all the same stuff: disinclination to commit, boredom, long-distance love affairs, etc. It’s all true. A “soul twin”? That would be nice. Hasn’t happened yet. It’s nice to hear that I am a gifted writer. I’m writing a book, as a matter of fact. If I can overcome my self-criticism and communication challenges, maybe I will actually finish it someday.
SUREFIRE SUCCESS
Lucky Juliana has Jupiter, the planet of fortune, in Sagittarius, ruler of publishing, inspiration, and international reach. She is likely the wise one among her friends and probably feels claustrophobic unless she’s discovering (or creating) new worlds, ideas, and sources of stimulation.  I guess this means that my book will be a worldwide, award-winning bestseller. Yay! I am feeling a bit claustrophobic now … I need to go and discover and create some new worlds.
