NO CABARET
Four dancers representing the genres of house, swing, and ballroom filed a lawsuit against New York City last summer. Their complaint is that the city’s Cabaret Laws restrict freedom of expression by limiting the act of social dancing at bars and restaurants. In court on September 2, 2005, the city defendants moved for a motion to dismiss citing that social dance is not “expressive” for purposes of the constitution. “The plaintiffs are going to reply by strengthening the evidence that dance is expressive,” says NYU law professor Paul Chevigny. “I am not sure it will ever be resolved if the case is dismissed as the city wants. ... Popular dancing has been viewed with alarm for literally centuries.” Well, have you seen krunk? Now that could hurt somebody.
FIGHT RIGHT
No! Empowering Women (Metamorphosis Productions) is a new self-defense DVD that demonstrates 25 moves you can use while in the most vulnerable position — on your back. Since 80% of sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows, women need to learn instinct-driven techniques. “Clichéd approaches such as poking the eyes and kicking the groin are difficult even in ideal training, much less with an acquaintance in close quarters,” says Brian Young, the lead instructor of Contact Combat Systems and a former instructor of Israeli military martial arts Krav Maga. The simple instructions even simulate scenarios using attackers and defenders of both genders to dispel sexist assumption. Purchase online at empoweringwomendvd.com.
PORN DIRECTOR TURNS HER CAMERA ON COMEDY
Pioneer adult filmmaker Skye Blue, known for more than 250 erotic movies and content creator for Playgirl TV, has branched out from the porn industry to direct a live stand-up performance featuring six funny ladies. Shot in December 2004 at Hollywood’s Ivar Theatre, The Naughty Show (Eagle Rock Entertainment) is like a multicultural, all-female version of The Original Kings Of Comedy. Keeping with the porn theme, each comedienne, wearing frosted make-up, bronzer, and a skimpy outfit, is escorted onto the stage by hard, buff, torso-baring male dancers. Must-hear jokes involve Cher-bashing, the cons of childbearing, and vibrators that are too big for one’s vagina.
EAT YOUR VEGGIES
Salad People, the third children’s cookbook from Moosewood Cookbook author and nutritionist Mollie Katzen, features recipes that are so fun that you won’t have to bribe your kids to eat well. Though intended for kids under 6, most of the all-vegetarian dishes require adult assistance and include detailed instructions, but the pictorials make it easy for “pre-readers” to prepare their own meals and snacks. The book even encourages children to play with their food — the title recipe involves building little people out of fruit and cheese — while teaching them cooking skills that will last a lifetime.
