Wall Street CEOs have access to a slew of trade magazines about finance and investments, so why can’t strippers and prostitutes in the U.S. have a go-to guide for business news or stories from sex-worker insiders? Well, now they do.
Debuting in spring 2005, $pread magazine is written by, for, and about men and women who work in the sex industry. From “Tips for Tricks” (“It’s business, not romance”) to “Escorting Etiquette” (“Don’t you dare take a shit in my bathroom”), $pread covers the funny, serious, and realistic side of the sex industry.
Sex-industry guru and activist Mary Christmas co-founded $pread with the help of fellow sexperts Rachel Aimee, Rebecca Lynn, and Raven Strega.
“There are sex-workers’ rights magazines in other parts of the world,” Christmas said. “Our country is just so backward and behind the times. We’re always one step behind in terms of sex-worker organizing.”
Although only three issues of $pread have been published, the winter issue is on its way and, according to Christmas, things have been looking up with each printing.
“We get great responses from people in the business who are just amazed that there’s a magazine about this stuff,” Christmas said.
She hopes the positive reaction brings in more donations and advertisements for the magazine, since $pread has been funded by the founders, along with benefit shows, so far.
“I think it surpasses people’s expectations at all levels,” Christmas said. “Which is really nice for us because we all worked so hard on it and really didn’t know what we were doing at first — we’re still figuring it out.”
