The best of both worlds

Multitalented Liza Rietz creates compelling apparel, music

Portland, Oregon clothing designer Liza Rietz been designing beautifully structured apparel since 2001 and is an active member of the artistic community in the area. She has had her work shown throughout the country in cities like Seattle, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., and sells her line at her store, "liza rietz and broken spoke," in Portland.

Rietz's striking collection is made completely out of natural fabrics, and each piece is individually made. The quality is merely one attribute of her line — the unique aesthetic structure of her designs speaks volumes about Rietz's innovative creativity and charm. Each piece is a stunning combination of form and femininity; they all feature unique sculptural elements, while still incorporating beautiful prints and soft colors.

Rietz is also talented when it comes to music. She has recently joined the band Tu Fawning, an orchestral, moody rock band which Rietz says sounds like "everything from Debussy to Deerhoof."

Here, Rietz talks about her own experience with fashion, and also her musical aspirations.

I would consider my personal style to be: modern silhouettes in neutral colors and lots of layering.

My fashion sense came from: having a fantastic dress-up chest when I was a kid, and a big imagination. Fashion has always been my creative expression.

I first became interested in clothing design when: the outfits that my Barbies came with bored me. They were the first I designed for!

If I could wear clothes from any era, I would pick: 1913 -1925. Erte's era. So incredible and inspirational!

I would love to dress: you mean someone famous? They have enough clothes already!!! I would just love my clothes to be a staple in any woman's closet. Then again, if Björk needed an outfit for her next tour... or if Tilda Swinton needed another dress for the Oscars...

My dreams for the future include: Continuing to design clothing and play music! Try to keep everything in balance and keep promoting it for all to enjoy.
