Chicago-based designer Michelle Kendrick took a horrible experience and turned it into a positive one. After being attacked at gunpoint, Kendrick realized that her inner strength had allowed her to run away, scream for help, and dial 911, which led to her assailant’s arrest and eventual sentencing. She channeled her newfound energy into Strong Girl Inc. (stronggirl.org), a clothing line that promotes and inspires confidence in women of all ages. Strong Girl T-shirts and onesies reinforce this mission while counteracting the exploitation of the female body by mainstream apparel companies. Sales will fund the company’s youth outreach program, which instills self-esteem in girls through weekly discussions about female artists and activities that encourages them to express their feelings through a visual medium. Kendrick’s adorable handmade tops are also available through the site.
