1. Hear that New American Library seeks manuscripts for young Latina readers.
2. Contact writer friends living in other parts of the country who share your background and desire to combat the stereotypical way your culture is portrayed in fiction.
3. Make the novel, titled Sister Chicas (sisterchicas.com), about three Latina girls approaching their quinceañeras in Chicago.
4. Alternate characters’ voices every chapter and draw from your own experiences to tell the stories.
5. Finish three chapters and get an agent.
6. Finish six chapters and sell the book.
7. Receive praise from Booklist and appear on Chicago Public Radio’s 848.
8. Bask in fame.
