The Girls’ Guide to Rocking is a step-by-step manual for girls who want to rock. From picking out an instrument to trademarking your band name, music critic Jessica Hopper gives her insider advice on how to turn your passion for music into a business.
Hopper knows her stuff, and she wants readers to know the biz, too — for as much encouragement as she dishes out, she points out just as many no-no’s and clichés to avoid. In a section about songwriting, she advises, “Don’t use a word that you don’t know the definition of.”
The book offers an abundance of relevant music references from all genres to give young readers an authentic and well-rounded background into contemporary music. Naming influences like Joanna Newsom, Janis Joplin, PJ Harvey, and Sheila E., Hopper steers girls away from the cookie cutter, and nudges them toward the cutting edge.
