Sheba White loves Katrina Corps

Volunteer vacations run the gamut in experience and price and often have the off-putting tinge of church-group sentimentality. Katrina Corps — a Muhammad Ali–quoting grassroots 501c organization formed by and for local citizens directly affected by the 2005 hurricane disaster — provides an excellent non-denominational model. Single volunteers are welcomed, room and partial board is provided, and week-long commitments are the norm. Air fare, dinner, and a staggering low $200 service fee are all you have to be concerned about, aside from the extra boost you’ll get in doing something for a change. As Ali would say, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Visit katrinacorps.org for more information.
