Hildegard

Daphne Carr loves Hildegard of Bingen

Every former devout Catholic girl like myself should have a "Hildegard of Bingen" phase, and I am currently in mine. Europe's first rock star, the 12th century abbess — and writer, mystic, poet, and scientist — Hildegard was the first composer whose music traveled the continent. Spiky arhythmic original melodies over instrumental drones with texts unusual for their day make her the distant cousin of teutonic chanteuse Nico. Her writing is pretty fierce too — she was the first person to ink a description of the female orgasm.

Daphne Carr is a Venus Zine writer.
