Dahlak is a poet/emcee/actor and activist (thisisdahlak.com), and his debut, Dual Consciousness, was one of my favorite releases of 2007. On the album (available on itunes), the West Coast wordsmith leaves behind the urge to be a “positive MC” or “mainstream rapper,” crafting lyrical pieces ranging from party tracks to songs about depression. I love that I can dance, chill, and have intellectual conversations with one CD as the soundtrack.
