Soulflower

Niema Jordan loves Soulflower

Sadly, I’ve just been introduced to Soulflower. During a performance at Columbia College’s Third Annual Women in Hip-Hop event on February 7 in Chicago, I heard her weave stories of love and uplift in classic hip-hop form over beats that made high school freshman and old-school hip-hop heads nod on one accord.

I bought her CD and listened to everything I could find online. The result: I discovered an MC whose music reflects a soul and consciousness missing from the mainstream and ultimately a new favorite. This veteran Miami-based lyricist has performed with KRS One, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill, and after more than 15 years in the game, she’s creating music that inspires listeners to transcend struggle.
