Camille Ikalina-Robles loves Built For the Sea at Noise Pop

When I first met Lia Rose, it took me a moment to realize that we had met before. The first time was when she was playing bass for another San Francisco band, Minipop. When I met her this night, she was the lead singer for a new band, Built For the Sea. Watching her set, I couldn’t believe how much talent she had as a songwriter and realized quite soon she was an exceptional performer in her own right.

Her soaring voice and dramatic indie rock sound is less pop than Minipop, and lyrically she often sings about everyday human experiences wrapped in imaginative metaphors. Though Rose is now backed with a full band, seeing her perform live is often like seeing her for the first time. In the handful of times I have seen Built For the Sea live, I’ve seen soft, mellow sets to full out loud guitar-trembling performances, to a bare bones acoustic set with a guest cellist.

Built For The Sea’s debut self-titled album was released in 2007. They play with the Helio Sequence at the Independent as part of the Noise Pop Music Festival tonight. I am excited to see them again and always eager to witness the next live incarnation of Built For the Sea.
