GAYbiGAYGAY
is an annual all-gay music festival that takes place on the last day of SXSW in Austin, Texas. Organizers Hazey Fairless and Silky Shoemaker started
the festival three years ago when they asked a few gay bands who were
playing SXSW to stop by for another show in Fairless' backyard. “The
response has been incredible,” Fairless says, “now bands are coming that
aren’t even in SXSW.” Since admission to the festival is free, Fairless
and Shoemaker rely on donations, volunteers, and beer sales to fund the
event. This year, they made T-shirts to help cover the cost of the
extra Port-o-Potties. The musical acts span the spectrum from bluegrass
to punk rock. This year's lineup includes MEN (composed of JD Sampson and
Johanna Fateman from Le Tigre), Screamclub, the Hot As Shits, and members of Lesbians On Ecstasy and Erase Errata. As a
bonus, the festival will also feature a tent where attendees can catch
a break from the Texas sun and watch gay documentaries and experimental
film shorts.
GAYbiGAYGAY begins today at 10 a.m. at 4604 Kitty Ave. in Austin, Texas.
