After quitting her job at Glamour Shots, photographer Jonnie
Andersen, then a resident of
Las Vegas, took a job tending bar downtown. She soon began inviting the
women who worked the streets around the bar to her own makeover and
photo
sessions in rented motel rooms with homemade fantasy backdrops. The
sessions led to friendships, adventure and a self-published book — The
Little Chapel of Esoteric Cosmetology — and the esoteric revelation that everybody likes to get their hair
done.
The models' faces and bodies bear signs of violence and addiction but
their expressions reveal more pleasure than is typical for a glamor
shot from the mall.
