What’s the most violent film you’ve ever seen? Try Funny Games (2007), the mind-bending horror-thriller by Michael Haneke starring Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt, and Brady Corbet. The ultra-disturbing instant classic is a recycled horror tale about a vacationing family terrorized by two psychopaths — in this case, two white-gloved, golf-loving. Simplistic dialogue, basic camera work, first-rate acting and the rarity of actual on-screen violence makes Funny Games the eeriest cinematic experience imaginable. For film aficionados, don’t worry, this American remake is a shot-by-shot creation of Haneke’s 1997 Austrian original, so you’re not missing out on much. Funny Games is available now on DVD. It’s Clockwork Orange meets your worst nightmare.
