Indie Gift Guide: San Francisco

From hippie chic to manly sweet, the city by the Bay has you covered

San Francisco style can be hard to pin down. With distinct neighborhoods in the city proper — the Tenderloin, the Mission, The Haight — and even more unique outlying cities, there are a lot of different types of ladies to please. Fortunately, there also is an abundance of artists, designers, crafters, and shops to help inspire holiday shoppers. From the new weird American folk wearing headbands and feathers to Steampunks in thrashed-up Victorian wear and all those glorious freaks in between, there’s bound to be a holiday treat for everyone on your unique list.

Yuki Nagai Morris’ adorable purses make a unique gift — they are all one of a kind. The cotton and wool totes come decked out in all sorts of colorful patterns and have large button closures, good for securing the coveted hippie-chic vibe.

Riverbird feather earring, created by Mariele Williams for doe

Sold individually or as a set, the Riverbird earring is perfect for any card-carrying SF lady — as many of whom sport feathers on most occasions. Williams’ long dangly feather earring, twisted with spiraled wire fits in quite well with all the other forest creature-themed gifts at doe.

Black Bird Bottle Opener by Fluffy Co.

Can you really go wrong with a fancy wall ornament that doubles as bottle opener? The natural wood grain pieces are screen-printed with Victorian-like images of stenciled birds and urethane sealed, then affixed with a Starr X bottle opener. Along with the woodcarvings, the artists behind the SF born-and-bred shop create and sell eco-friendly T-shirts, belts, and wallets. Everything is created in their studio using local materials.

Time Flies necklaces by The Weekend Store

Oakland creator Adjowah Brodie uses vintage typewriter keys, buttons, and charms to create her line of recycled accessories. The Time Flies necklaces are layers of tiny clocks with delicate birds twisted place atop. Each design is named after women who have made an impact on Brodie’s life. They make sweet tributes to the friends and family who’ve stuck by your side.

“Nightmares” by Nosebleed books

The hand-bound collection of terrifying tales is a labor of love from Brendan Garvey and Erin Hagstrom of Oakland. The two split up the work equally, with Garvey crafting the stories and Hagstrom laying out pages and sewing up the seams. They make the perfect holiday gift for those on your list who aren’t so keen on traditional holiday spirit. The books, along with Nosebleed’s other titles, “B. Garbee Zines” and “No More Bummer,” are sold through their Myspace page and at loads of indie bookshops throughout SF and Oakland.
