On-a-budget Halloween costumes

For many women, Halloween is an excuse to parade around parties scantily clad, pretending that it’s all in the name of old-fashioned fun. But for those of us who are sick and tired of slutty lumberjacks, naughty nurses, and sexy centipedes, here’s a little inspiration for some creative costumes that you can likely put together from your own closet (and maybe a little help from your friends’ closets, too). Because, hey, we all know what it’s like to be on a budget.

TRY THIS IF YOU’RE FEELING: out of this world.
WHAT YOU NEED:
white, white, and more white. Skirt, shirt, hat, gloves, scarf, knee
socks, shoes. Pack of Orbit gum. And most importantly, that cheesy
smile.
COUPLE IT WITH: Nothing. This costume idea is too good to be overshadowed by a partner.

TRY THIS IF YOU’RE FEELING: glamorous.
WHAT YOU NEED: a mod-style dress or even an oversized T-shirt, opaque black tights, ballet flats, and a fabulous vintage fur coat if you can find one. Stay heavy on the black eye makeup, but step away from the dope. You don’t need to get that into character.
COUPLE IT WITH: A white-haired, camera-wielding Andy Warhol.

TRY THIS IF YOU’RE FEELING: political.
WHAT YOU NEED: a smart business suit (say yes to shoulder pads), matching pumps, and some campaign gear.
COUPLE IT WITH: You can go two ways here —either a smooth-talking, salt-and-peppered Bill, or bring on the rivalry with Barack Obama.

TRY THIS IF YOU’RE FEELING: artistic.
TRY THIS COSTUME: a white shirt, Mexican-patterned skirt, scarves, flowers for hair, and most importantly, the infamous unibrow.
COUPLE IT WITH: Muralist husband Diego Rivera, and lots of paint brushes.
