When 25-year-old New York City-based designer Kimenna Kim decided to begin her own clothing line, she decided to keep the clothing simple, yet unique, with a name to match.
“The color yellow usually makes me feel bright and warm when I see it and each piece of clothing that I make has an individual story into them,” Kim said. “So, I named it as ‘Lemonstory.’”
Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Kim’s love for creating fashion goes back to her lifelong interest in art.
“I studied Fine Art when I was young and fabric was my favorite object to work with,” she said. “That's when I decided to come to New York and become a fashion designer.”
It is her love of detail that shows in her line of blouses, dresses, and shirt dresses. Constructed by hand individually for each customer by Kim, her dresses feature A-line silhouettes in breathable cotton with touches such as pleats and ties or plackets at the armholes to create visual interest.
Kim took some time to introduce us to her life, her collection, and her passion for her craft:
Who is your favorite designer(s)?
Miuccia Prada.
Explain your personal style and who/what has influenced your look?
Feminine + Minimal + Avant Garde + Timeless + Structured + Nostalgic. But I don't want to define my style yet because I am still exploring to get to know myself. Everything inspires me – especially art.
What are your wardrobe staples?
A dress, flat shoes, big necklace, and a vintage bag.
When and how did the line begin?
It started in April 2008. I always loved making things with my two hands and thought it will be fun to create a handmade collection.
What colors and fabrics do you prefer to use and why?
I have been into stripes for a while and now. I am loving floral prints cotton and silk.
Where do you get your materials?
The garment district in New York
What is the best way to wear one of your shirt dresses?
You can wear it as is or put a belt around with a skinny jean but there are so many other ways. It is up to how creative you are.
What are your daily essentials?
Coffee + Positive Mind + Passion.
How do you unwind?
I take a walk with my dog, listen to music, and watch a movie with a glass of wine. Eat good food.
What are your future plans for the line?
I am learning to be a great designer. I would want to know and experience as much as possible about fashion. I am also taking it slowly to reach the goal that I set, which is to become a great fashion designer who cares about my customers, makes high quality clothes, and make garments with love.
