Designer Sheana Hinesley has made more than 2,000 pairs of underwear, so you can bet your bottom she knows what she’s doing. Hinesley traded college coursework for a sewing machine and started Malicious Designs in 2001 to “provide an edgy cuteness for the woman who is about to get into her next bar fight.”
Malicious Designs’ apparel arsenal includes lingerie, clothing, bags, and wallets. “I didn’t think there was a market for handmade, unique garments, so I thought I would jump in first,” Hinesley says. “Everything is made with the love of my little hands — handmade, hand-dyed so it’s special.”
Hinesley’s designs will primp your privates with their mod style and sophisticated sexiness. Pink and black panties with a skull and crossbones logo, sheer undies with a ruffled bottom, and retro playsuits (halter-skirt set) are just some of the skivvies that she sells. “I love ’40s and ’50s lingerie, especially from old Frederick’s of Hollywood catalogs ... any kind of underwear that covers your full bottom,” Hinesley says.
Her designs must receive the Sheana seal of approval, though. “It has to be something that I can wear,” she says. “If I can’t put my ass in there, my label has no right to be on it.”
Hinesley’s lux lingerie can be found at virginthreads.com, as well as stores in the U.S., Japan, Hong Kong, Milan, and London. Prices range from $24 for a pair of undies and $150 for a set.
So, does Ms. Hinesley live up to her company’s mission and kick some ass in her sassy underpants? “Hmmm, I can’t remember my last bar fight,” she says. “But that’s also because I stopped drinking whiskey and left Chicago. Girls there like to give the evil eye too much.”
