October 11, 2007, at Chicago’s Empty Bottle —
Billed as the night’s “surprise guest,” Reefer Duberland — which consists of members of Interpol, Deerhunter, and Liars — took the small stage at the Empty Bottle as though they hadn’t just played to larger crowds at separate citywide venues earlier in the evening.
Although presumably fatigued, the hour-long rare set found Liars frontman Angus Andrews, Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox, and Interpol frontman Paul Banks relaxed and jam-band experimental in mood. Cox and Andrews handled the majority of the punchy vocals, while various members culled from all three bands channeled pre-punk dub reverb à la late–Clash productions, rounding out the transcendent evening with a 10-minute meet-and-greet with fans.
Noting Interpol’s penchant for performing little-publicized events under pseudonyms — see their appearance at the New York’s Luna Lounge as Cuddleworthy — fans should keep alert during the remainder of the band’s tour.
