CD Review: Wu-Tang Clan  Issue #34 Issue #34

8 Diagrams

Wu-Tang Clan’s December album release date marks the third anniversary of the death of one of their most prominent members, Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The record pays tribute — though not necessarily with words or themes — with music that sounds much like the old dirty golden days with ODB.

8 Diagrams is a continuous reference, sampling the canonical Notorious B.I.G. and the Wu-Tang staple, Kung Fu films. The collaborative and twisted play on words is a reminder of how far the Clan has distanced itself from mainstream rap since the early ’90s.

Starting off with their self-proclaimed “Weak Spot,” a blasting bass line and heavy orchestration gives way to some more somber tracks. Nostalgia sinks in during “Life Changes” with all the members grieving and rapping about returning to the recording studio where ODB died and “My People Gently Weep,” which drowns the Beatles original guitars to make the song even more heartbreaking and 8’s best.
