Duel At Dawn (Kanine)

On their second American release, Duel At Dawn, Mommy and Daddy (aka Vivian Sarratt and Edmond Hallas) push even further past whatever uneasiness their name might cause to belt out some of the most sultry and abrasive electro-punk around. From Sarratt's dangerously seductive siren call to Hallas' unbridled roar, there are few out there who combine the raw sexiness of new wave with the sheer ferocity of punk the way they do.

The first track off Duel At Dawn to really stand out is "A Good Deal," where Sarratt's ice-queen articulation is combined with some classic Joan Jett-style attitude and guitars. Her dual nature is played up even further on "Franconia Road," an incredible rocknroll dance number where the desperation in her voice is equal to that of any housewife, a role she plays just as easily as she does femme fatale.

As for Hallas, his vocals are about as restrained as a tsunami and leaves about just as much devastation in his wake. Tracks like "Lost the Plot" and "Full" illustrate this perfectly, hitting listeners with just as much impact as a punch in the face, as the guitars make a few nods to metal and industrial, all the while giving listeners a beat they can dance to.

Probably the best part about Mommy and Daddy, though, is their use of electronics — not superfluous the way it is with so many other bands out there. The duo doesn't let technology override the fact that, at heart, they're a balls-to-the-wall rocknroll band, only using it when they mean it. In other words, this married couple from Brooklyn isn't your mommy and daddy's electropunk band.
