Come on,
Two years ago, the former journalist and aspiring novelist encountered a series of tragic events that prompted him to write. In an attempt to relinquish the pain of his mother’s death, amongst other pitfalls, the attempted novel quickly turned into a record; while he found himself strumming his guitar in order to find the words. During the series of coincidentally fortunate events that followed, Jollett recruited himself a power pop-rock band and thus, the Airborne Toxic Event was born.
Anti-love themed and an obvious result of a relationship turned sour, most of Jollett’s pain is felt through the outcome of being a newly single 20-something. The self-titled debut is an album about drunken one-night stands and letting go of that false temporary love that seems to come with it. “All these drugs and one night stands / I tremble when I think of what you do,” Jollett recalls in the Strokes-infused “Something New” — which sounds more like
As he revels in sleepless nights that never end and that feeling of seeing a girl’s clothes spread all over the floor in “Happiness Is Overrated,” Jollett comes to the conclusion that he doesn’t really need anyone in his bed after all.
A heavy string intro to “Innocence” — played by former concerto violinist, Anna Bulbrook — is delicate and compelling, finishing strong in the style of Ambulance LTD buildups and climaxes. It’s always nice to hear a little soul come out of the Los Angeles area.
