Microcastle (Kranky)

While the twin 2007 Deerhunter releases Cryptograms and Fluorescent Gray evinced jittery lightning bolts of catharsis, the astounding Microcastle (Kranky) is the sound of abject clarity that comes when the storm clouds pass — it’s an ascetically laser-focused rock record. High points abound, but it’s the tremulous resplendence of “Saved By Old Times” that truly captures the spirit of the new record, sounding just as dangerous and punk in its quixotic introversion as any of the band’s bombast of yore.
