Art Project (Red Panda)

Singer-songwriter Kendall Jane Meade (who is also the woman behind the Red Panda label) has spent four years creating the follow-up to her last release, Dreamer’s Book. Flanked by an ever-changing roster of musicians, Meade’s songwriting focuses on emotional ebb and flow.

A story of love gone right, “Press Play (And Then Repeat)” stands out with its syncopated vocals supported by a melodic bass line. “Red Flowers” relays the sad loss of a “heart sister.” When Mascott changes tone, briefly, we get the upbeat and loose, “Dream Another Day” — before the sadness returns with the dirge-like waltz of “Like Letting Go Of the Sun.” The harmony and banjo on “Wildwood Flower” end the record on a high note.

Although Meade aims for a timeless album, Art Project stops short. Not quite trendy, the album also fails to offer anything new — or anything distinguishing Meade from being just another beautiful voice. Mascott plays it too safe from the sincere piano chords that begin “Live Again” to the predictable lyrics — “Ain’t it funny how some days things are one way / And now I’m cryin’ over you.” — on “4th Of July.” Looser edges would have made for a better record.
