The first time I heard Claire Holley was over three years ago in a little coffee house in Naperville, Illinois, where she and Beki Hemingway sang an amazing version of Gillian Welch's "Orphan Girl." It was then that I took interest in Holley's music. Since that time she has released a number of CDs, and her style has matured over each release. Her most recent, Dandelion, is her richest offering to date.
Holley has the ability to really capture the essence and innocence of music without coming off as arrogant. Her music takes us to the Deep South, where folk music, storytelling, and bluegrass collide. Danielle Howle appears midway through the CD with her rich, deep, southern voice. This is a welcome duet. As many musicians are extending themselves to blow people out of the water with their new wave of sound, Holley takes the road less traveled. She explores human existence and the subtle things that we miss while we are taking the more traveled highways. She is exploring such an early sound in music that has been rejuvenated by that good old acoustic guitar. Dandelion offers a light into greener pastures. This album is good for the Saturday afternoon spent at home.
