Smoke (Seven Day Publishing)

Get ready for an aural assault from Smoke, a Stamford, Connecticut–based band in the heavy metal/hard rock genre. The band—lead vocalist Gonzo, backing vocalist, guitarist, and resident “metal nurse” Angel, guitarist Craig Sasson, bassist Jimmy P, and powerhouse drummer John Fowler—blend together well on their four-song self-titled CD. Gonzo delivers urgency in every note with his guttural growl, starting on the beginning track “Hate Me” (“Do you languish in my anguish / Do you long to see me cry”) to the slower, spiral-y “Time.”

“Hate Me” showcases Angel’s unique vocals, and this definitely gives Gonzo a worthy singing counterpart that helps the song pack an extra punch. Anyone who has seen Smoke live can attest to the thrill of seeing Angel, decked out in “metal nurse” attire, long hair flowing, as she vocally spars with Gonzo and adds an electricity all her own. “Time,” a meditation on life and when our “time’s up,” (the chorus, “No one lives forever,” rings throughout the song) has a chugging yet powerful melody. “Standing Still” and “The Pit” also showcase a stellar band, especially John Fowler’s taut, pulsating drum work. “Standing Still” also boasts a sawing guitar riff punctuated by Gonzo not letting up as he wails, “Why are you standing still?” The songs on this CD are powerful to say the least; they come at you fast and furious and the urgency does not let up. Be forewarned: Smoke is not for the faint of heart or easy listening lovers, but it sure will stay with you long after you have listened.
