Venus Zine, the internationally distributed magazine and Web site (venuszine.com) about women in music, art, film, fashion, and DIY culture, seeks an intern to work directly with the magazine’s DIY editor, Justina Blakeney. In addition to working on Venus Zine projects, the intern will work on Blakeney’s other projects, which include books (Blakeney’s books include 99 Ways to Cut, Sew & Deck Out Your Denim) and Compai. Candidates must be able to commit to a minimum of three months.
Though this is an unpaid position, it’s an excellent opportunity to work with a leader in the DIY community and a good way to gain hands-on experience in the publishing, fashion, and marketing industries. We seek a candidate with a passion for fashion, style, DIY culture, and publishing and who can work on the technical, marketing and PR sides of the business. This isn’t so much a good position for someone whose primary goal is to be a fashion designer. We’re seeking a hard worker who is highly organized, punctual, yet laid back (you will be working in a creative studio — not a corporate environment).
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL:
• live near Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where Blakeney’s studio is located, and is accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment.
• have a flexible schedule. When Blakeney is on deadline, it would be great if you could work more hours; whereas, when off deadline, ideally you’d work fewer hours.
• be computer and Internet savvy and familiar with Quickbooks, Photoshop, and InDesign.
INTERNSHIP DUTIES
• working approximately 10 to 20 hours per week.
• running occasional light errands.
• scanning and editing photos.
• product research, fact-checking, technical editing, organizing files.
• PR and marketing (writing press releases, assembling press packets, sending newsletters, event planning, customer and press relations, maintaining social networking pages).
• assistance at special events and light office work.
HOW TO APPLY
Please e-mail resume, cover letter, and any applicable work samples to the attention of Venus Zine Editor In Chief Amy Schroeder at amy@venuszine.com by February 29, 2008. No phone calls please.
