Venus Zine, the internationally distributed magazine and Web site (venuszine.com) about women in music, art, film, fashion, and DIY culture, seeks an intern to work directly with the magazine's DIY section photo editor, Jen Ng. Candidates must be able to commit to a minimum of two issues (with opportunity for growth within the magazine). Scheduling is flexible, and you will be working closely with Ng at on-location shoots as well as doing some work on your own time.
Though this is an unpaid position, it's an excellent opportunity to work with a long-term Venus Zine photo editor who's always in search of new and innovative ideas for visuals and has established contacts in the editorial world. It's also a great way to gain hands-on experience in photo production (location scouting; prop sourcing; light art directing; seeking stylists, make-up artists, and photographers for hire; managing budgets; and networking). The intern will gain plenty of exposure in photo editing/producing and not be stuck with performing menial tasks.
We seek a candidate with a passion for photography, style, DIY culture, and interiors. A strong work ethic is a must, and the position requires great organization and punctuality in a fun and laid-back environment.
START DATE: flexible, but preferably mid to late June. If you miss this production cycle, we can work together in the fall (around September).
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL:
• live in NYC (Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn), where Jen Ng resides.
• has great time-management skills. Must be able to meet multiple deadlines throughout the course of a production cycle (typically taking place within a six-week period per issue).
• be computer and Internet savvy and familiar with Photoshop and Excel.
• be an effective communicator. Must be able to translate a vision into words when working with photographers and stylists.
INTERNSHIP DUTIES
• working approximately 30 to 40 hours per production cycle throughout the course of six weeks (can be flexible).
• collaborating with DIY section editor, art director, and photo editor on photo and art ideas.
• e-mailing publicists, photographers, and contributors to gather images for articles.
• compiling a network of photographers, stylists, and locations fit for future photo shoots.
• running occasional light errands (location scouting — great way to learn the city!; returning samples from product loans).
• retouching, reformatting, and editing photos.
HOW TO APPLY
Please e-mail résumé, cover letter, and any applicable work samples
to the attention of Venus Zine associate photo editor Jen Ng at
