Venuszine.com — the Web component of internationally distributed women's music and culture magazine Venus Zine — seeks a fall semester intern to work directly with venuszine.com's concert reviews editor, Laura Leebove. Candidates will work from home and must commit to at least three months.
Though this is an unpaid position, it is an excellent opportunity to work with a Venus Zine editor who's always in search of up-and-coming musicians. It's also a great way to gain hands-on experience in music writing and editing and a chance to get some great writing clips. Other perks include concert guest-list privileges, writing opportunities, and occasional free music.
We seek a candidate with a passion for attending concerts and writing about music as well as one who is an excellent copy editor. Strong communication and organization skills are extremely important in addition to the ability to work on deadline.
START DATE: flexible but somewhere around late August/early September.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL:
• live in a city with access to national touring musicians. Candidates from smaller towns will be considered but would have fewer opportunities to write concert reviews.
• be an avid concert-goer. Do your friends turn to you to find out what shows are coming up in your area? Do you keep up with music blogs and pay attention to what's going on with up-and-coming musicians?
• be an effective communicator. The intern will be regularly in touch with writers, photographers, and publicists, and must have a professional but friendly attitude.
• have reliable access to the Internet. Since this is a work-from-home position, most communication with the concert reviews editor will be done via e-mail, so it's important that you don't drop off the face of the Earth for a few days at a time.
• have strong writing and editing skills and pay close attention to detail. The intern will have the opportunity to review shows and will likely be required to attend and review two concerts per month (might vary depending on the city). This could lead to writing opportunities for other sections of the Web site or possibly the print magazine. S/he will also be copy editing and fact-checking, so details are important.
• work well on deadline. Show reviews need to be turned around within 24-48 hours of the end of the concert and reviews need to be fact-checked and posted in a timely manner.
• be computer and Internet savvy. The intern will be posting several reviews on venuszine.com every week. It also will help to have basic Photoshop skills, as there might be some light photo editing or resizing.
INTERNSHIP DUTIES
• working approximately five to 10 hours per week (this is not exact because work will be very spread out throughout the week).
• copy editing and fact-checking concert reviews, writing headlines.
• posting concert reviews on venuszine.com.
• tracking down publicity contacts for musicians.
• writing two concert reviews per month (may vary depending on the city).
• researching and listening to music of bands beings considered for review.
• collaborating with the concert reviews editor to brainstorm ideas and help decide which shows should be covered on the site.
• e-mailing publicists, writers, and photographers to help coordinate concert reviews.
• possibly some occasional light photo editing or resizing.
HOW TO APPLY Please e-mail your résumé, cover letter, and three samples of your music writing to Venus Zine concert reviews editor Laura Leebove at laura@venuszine.com by Sunday, July 27. Also include three to five magazines or music blogs/Web sites you read regularly, along with five touring bands/musicians you'd like to see.
